Lapland Arctic Circle

Lapland shares one famous feature with other arctic regions, the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle is the border of the daylight zone. It is the northernmost point where sun can be seen during the winter solstice 21st of December, and the southernmost point where the Midnight Sun shows itself during midsummer. Measured from the Ivalo airport during the Polar Night, the sun does not rise for nearly a month. During midsummer it does not set for over two months.

Location of the Arctic Circle

The Arctic Circle is located approximately 66,5 degrees Northern Latitude. Due to small changes in the Earth's axle, the geographical location of the Arctic Circle is not stable. In fact, at the moment it is moving north approximately ten meters a year. It will start moving back in the year 21 750.
