Northern lights appear mostly around the arctic. Finland belongs to this region, although northern lights are much more rare in Southern Finland than in Lapland, where they appear daily. The phenomenon occurs all year, but can be seen mainly during winter due to the surrounding darkness. Thus the polar night is the best time for watching northern lights.
Northern lights form curved, vertical shapes. When observing directly beneath the phenomenon, the lights appear as a crown-like formation across the sky. However, because northern lights usually form several hundred kilometers high and over a relatively large area, it is difficult to be able to find the spot directly below the crown. Northern lights always occur in over 60 kilometers altitude.
